Swimming Pool Accessories

Author: Owen Jones

Millions of people love to swim in their gardens about the world. Swimming and playing in the water is great fun, even if you have to go to a pond, pool, a river or the sea to do it. in order to make full use of a garden pool, you do have to live in a place where the weather is warm. The owner also has to have to have some money as pool maintenance fees are high.

Therefore, when people have gone to the trouble of having a garden pool installed, they also like to have the pool used as frequently or as much as possible. You can encourage your friends and family to use the pool more often by making it more fun and more comfortable to do so. Pool accessories or swimming accessories are a means of achieving this.

People like to be in the water, so you could make it straightforward for them by using poolside furniture that will float when supporting an adult. There are various objects like floating chairs, floating tables and plastic inflatable lidos that will keep you and your guests in contact with the water. Good floating furniture will also support people out of the water, cheap gear will not.

If you like the notion of floating in your pool while sitting on a chair reading a book, this sort of furniture is for you. Lots of these seats have an in-built glass holder and float so that your waist is at the water line, although this just depends on the chair and the person sitting in it.

Then there are floating sun loungers which do roughly the same thing as a floating chair, except they tend to keep your whole body out of the water so that you can get an even sun tan. Inflatable lidos or rafts are similar items, although the inflatable lido or camp bed is a very cheap item compared with the more solid floating seats and loungers.

Other items that you could use to raise the enjoyment of your garden pool are aquatic games. You could string up a water polo net or a water volley ball net in order to get people moving. Beach balls are another good idea for encouraging play in the pool. If you are on your own, you could just float around in an inflated truck tyre. They are very comfortable and very cheap.

If you are dead set on relaxation at your pool, you could build a poolside bar. The bar stools could be in the water, if your pool is large enough, otherwise you could incorporate the pool bar into a breakfast bar where you can prepare and eat light meals. Weighty meals are not good for swimmers anyway.

Pool accessories or swimming accessories will heighten your enjoyment of your pool and make your friends and family wait for you next invitation to come around for a swim impatiently. Most of these items do not have to be costly either.

Do you have a swimming pool or are you thinking of having one installed? If so, then it is recommended that you have a pool alarm fitted as well. You could be asking yourself if you definitely need such an alarm, but all will be revealed in the rest of this article. A pool alarm can be incorporated into your present burglar alarm system, if it is flexible enough.

One of the reasons for installing a pool alarm is that it might be required by law, national or local. Numerous kids have been drowned skinny dipping in a neighbour’s pool when they are away on holiday.

Some local authorities insist on putting up fences, but they are basically ineffectual, so the move is towards pool alarms. This does not really have to be costly because most people who can afford a pool will have a home alarm system already.

If your local authority does not have requirements for alarms already, it might be worth checking out what legislation is in the pipeline. Most of the contemporary pool alarms are activated while there is a disturbance at water level, so they are great for deterring night-time aquatic intruders.

However, of course does not merely warn about interlopers, sometimes people fall into the pool because they are drunk. The alarm will allow you to rescue them. It will also warn about children falling into the pond, which is a continuous source of anxiety for parents with pools.

Because a lot of pool owners are no longer young and their children are grown up, they frequently wonder why they need to secure their pool. Well, one good reason, besides saving lives, is that it can reduce your insurance premium. To be blunt, it shows that you are doing your best and so reduces your legal responsibility.

Pool safety devices are easy to install, particularly if you already have a warning device, scanners and siren installed on your property. For most people who can afford a pool, the price of an alarm is off-set against the peace of mind that it will deliver is fairly negligible.

While you go searching for a pool alarm, there are lots of places for you to look, but the best place to go first of all is the supplier of your existing home security system. This is because they will be the best people to be able to integrate the two systems so that you do not have two sets of sirens, two sets of detectors and two sets of everything else.

Once you have had a pool alarm installed, you have one further moral obligation and that is to make sure that it works. This is easy. Set your alarm and jump into the water. Reset the alarm and walk up to your pool. In both circumstances, the pool alarm should have been triggered.

You should check your alarm every month or two in conjunction with checking your existing home security system. This is a necessary precautionary step, because you cannot expect items to keep working for years without requiring some maintenance.

Qualifying For The Daytona 500

Author: Owen Jones

The Daytona 500 is money-wise the biggest stock car racing event on the NASCAR racing calendar and it is also unique in the way that contenders have to qualify for a starting position in it.

The Daytona 500?s exclusive qualifying process was designed by the pioneer of NASCAR, Bill France, who also formulated most of the other rules and regulations governing the sport today. He had two main objectives for changing the rules for the Daytona 500:

firstly, to increase income from the race because the site for the Daytona 500 is so expensive and secondly, to better prepare the drivers by making them have to qualify under racing conditions.

Bill France resolved to follow the standard set by other, shorter Daytona tracks, rather than use standard NASCAR qualifying two laps. He also decided to allow soft-tops and hardtops to take part in the Daytona 500 by putting them through a 100 mile qualifier which was to take place two days before the main race on the Sunday.

In 1969, the NASCAR authorities resolved to move the qualifying races to the preceding Thursday and increased the qualifying distance from 100 miles to 125 miles. In 2005, this distance was again increased to 150 miles.

There has only ever been one year in the times past of the Daytona 500 when the qualifying races had to be cancelled and that was in 1968, over forty years ago.

One would anticipate the winner of the qualifiers to win the major event, but this is not usually the what happens. In 1962, the legendary Fireball Roberts achieved it and in 2004, so did Dale Earnhardt Jnr..

Nonetheless in the history of the Daytona 500, only eight drivers have had victory in both the qualifiers and the main event. The winner in the qualifiers has come second fourteen times, so if you want to gamble, that is a better bet.

Another remarkable statistic is that only once have the first and second places in the Daytona 500 gone to the winners of the two qualifiers. That occurred in 1995 with Sterling Marlin and Dale Earnhardt. In fact, things have not often gone well for the winners of the Daytona 500 qualifiers.

Thirty-eight qualifying winners have finished up in the thirty-first place or worse. The supreme misery however goes to Tony Stewart who is the only winner of a qualifying race in the history of Daytona 500 to have come in last in the actual Daytona 500 itself.

The Rapid Weight Loss Myths

Author: Owen Jones

There is nothing intrinsically wrong with wanting to be slimmer just to have a sexier body. Many people have moulded their bodies to make them look more healthy and more desirable. However, there is no way to attain this new look in a day of two. The problem is that most people do not want to wait, they want it now.

This can lead to these people making rather rash and, it has top be said, rather silly decisions. They are not willing to wait and they are not willing to work for what they want. This is why so many people turn to rapid weight loss diets. Some ‘guru’ brings out a new fad diet and a good proportion of the ‘I want it now’ crowd jump on the band wagon. Only to be disappointed again within the year or less.

Speed diets or rapid weight loss diets tend to put out great advertising copy that is very difficult to resist. However, all diets, no matter which one you choose, Weight Watchers, Atkins or fad diet, depend on overweight people making lifestyle changes in order for them to work permanently.

There is a very apposite saying: if you always do what you always did, then you will always get what you always got. That says it all. You can lose weight with all but the stupidest of diets, but if you go back to your old ways when you hit your target weight, you MUST slowly, but gradually creep back to your old weight.

If you give your body more calories than it needs, it will store them for when it does need them. The problem is that that day never comes for too many people, because they never exert themselves. This is especially true of fad diets like the ‘cabbage water’ diet. Yes, you will lose weight on it, but you would lose weight by fasting whatever you did. For a while, and then you might get sick. For a diet to work, it has to be flexible and enjoyable enough for you to be able to stick with it for the rest of your life. Make no mistake, dieting is long-haul.

Many rapid weight loss programs actually only squeeze the water out of you. Just like a wet sponge. But a good dieter maintains his or her grip on that sponge, not letting it soak up water again. The problem with short term dieting, is that you let go of the sponge underwater.

This is why serial dieters first lose weight and are happy; then finish dieting, go back to their old weight and become depressed. In that state of depression they are suckers for the advertisers of the next latest craze diet. In other words, they are being manipulated and literally squeezed dry, but of their money too.

These silly rapid weight loss programs also include fat loss pills. They are not making you lose fat, well, maybe a tiny amount gets flushed out with all the excess water you are carrying. They are only diuretics under another name. How many pills would I sell if I called them diuretics? How many more would I sell if I called them miracle fat loss pills?

Type the word diuretic into a engine and find out more about them. They are all around you in mild healthy forms. A diuretic will essentially cause your body to lose more fluid than was in the diuretic. Tea is a diuretic, for example.

This list of these dopey dieting aids to rapid weight loss goes on and on, but someone must be buying them and you can bet your bottom dollar that it is the sad, depressed dieter who let go of the sponge.

Slimming soap! Slimming soap is being advertised as being a rare Eastern remedy for corpulence. Well, let me tell you, I live in the East and I have never come across it here. Asians are slim because they do a lot of physical labour and do not come under the pressure to eat junk food that Westerners do, although that situation is changing quickly too.

Magnetic weight loss earrings, I ask you! Even being inebriated without a present for your wife ten minutes before Christmas Day is not a good enough excuse to fall for this one, surely? The advertisers say that the secret of this set of earrings is that they are magnetic.

Well, if you believe this, why not get a pair of $1 children’s toy magnets or even a couple of fridge magnets and put one in each hip pocket? Two? Well, after all, you would not want to lose weight from only one side, would you? You would be lop sided.

Just remember, when you are looking for a rapid weight loss diet: there ain’t one ( that will work for life). If you are putting on weight, then your lifestyle is wrong and it is up to you alone to change it.

Archery Tips For Beginners

Author: Owen Jones

There are two main things that an archer has to do well to ensure the best likelihood of consistently hitting the target. The first is to hold the string stable at full draw until the archer is ready to shoot and secondly, letting go of the string in the right way every time. Most suggestions for beginners should help the beginner to achieve these two states.

‘Creep’ is the first issue that a beginner should safeguard against. Creep is the phenomenon of the arrow, string and hand creeping forward as the archer takes aim. It is vital to keep the arrow at full draw for consistency. If the archer permits the hand to creep forward, the shot will not be consistent. Creep is caused by lack of concentration and strain.

The strain comes from attempting to shoot a bow that the archer is not yet physically powerful enough to control. People, especially men often attempt to shoot a bow that is too powerful for them. If an archer is experiencing creep, the bow is probably too powerful for him or her at the moment. The archer ought to use a weaker bow and exercise more until they are stronger.

The effects of creep on the shot are that the archer will not learn how to determine the fall of the arrow over distance and so will probably undershoot, that is, the arrow will possibly fall short. The only way to learn how to use the bow properly is to always shoot at full draw.

Weariness can also lead to creep, but the archer can regulate this by resting well before a competition, staying fit and not using a bow that takes so much muscle that it cannot be shot for the period of the competition.

The novice archer has to learn how to let go of the arrow as well. It is much more difficult to hit the target if the release is not right. The novice should get an experienced archer to demonstrate the release so that he or she does not develop bad habits. The correct way to release the string is to relax the muscles in the tips of the fingers used to draw the string.

Novices often hurt their fingers after a couple of releases, so they try to release the string too quickly which can lead to pulling the string to the side a little. This little wobble can send the arrow off course.

The release should be clean and to the rear of the arrow, not to the side. If the release is to the rear, the arrow will fly accurately to where the archer pointed it. If the archer is having a great deal of trouble toughening up the finger tips, it is possible to use a string release device, which will take the strain off the finger tips until they can be toughened up.

An archer could try the karate methods of toughening the skin and the hand. One of these is to plunge the straight fingers into sand. An archer could also try a guitarists’ method, that of daubing the finger tips with methylated spirits on a regular basis.

Fashionable Dog Names

Author: Owen Jones

Fashion seems to decree everything these days. From what you wear to what you name your dog, everything you do is dictated by the need to be cool. Cool dog names are hard to come by and even harder to choose. This is because no sooner is something in fashion, than it is out again.

Who would want to choose a cool dog name that may not be fashionable tomorrow? People usually play it safe as a result, hence why the same names have been so popular for so long. To try and break that cycle, five cool dog names are listed below with the reasons why you should choose one of them for your dog.

Phoenix: What could be cuter than a bird that goes up in flames and then rises from the ashes? Phoenix is one of the cool dog names that will never go out of fashion because it is based in mythology. It has a timeless quality which has somewhat surprisingly failed to increase its popularity.

Star: Star is one of the cute dog names because it has so many connotations that you can have a hard time finding out where to begin. A star in the sky is a phenomenon and a star can refer to someone that outperforms in a particular field. It is indeed a high form of praise and so is definitely a cute dog name.

Lady: Lady is one of the most popular dog names but it is also one of the cool dog names because of Disney. Lady and the Tramp was a huge hit and made the name popular but also gave it some credibility. In this case popularity is second to coolness.

Elvis: The coolest of cute dog names. Elvis Presley was undoubtedly cool and remains cool today even after his death. It is infinitely cool to name your dog after an icon who never goes out of fashion.

Shadow: There is a dark and mysterious quality about Shadow that makes it a cute dog name. It would be used to best effect on a large dog though because it wouldn’t have the same strong effect with a small breed.

Whatever cute dog names you consider for your pooch, it is one sure-fire way to give them an identity of their own and make them memorable in the eyes of others. .

A lot of people do not understand their bodies. That much is obvious because they think that fasting will help them become fitter. They feel convinced that their bodies will feed off their surplus fat and that they will lose weight as a result. They also appear to imagine that they will automatically end up with more muscle, just in the right places too. Some take up fasting for fitness because they think that it will rid them of the toxins in their bodies.

Another belief that these fasters have is that they are will be able to flush out all of the impurities in their bodies by drinking lots of water at the same time as not consuming food. Even if this is correct, it would be a long process that would mean that you would have to fast for at least five to seven days though in order to complete the detox process, although it is still not clear scientifically whether fasting is the right approach for those that seek fitness.

There are many other routes to fitness that do work well though. For example, you can cut back the amount of food that you consume. Cutting back is not fasting, it is dieting and it is not only far more effectual, it is also far less difficult. This, together with drinking lots of water and increasing your amount of physical activity will help you to become fitter.

If you drink a lot of soda like cola or lemonade, which are full of sugar, like a lot of kids do, or lots of cups of sugared tea or coffee, like a lot of adults do, then just replacing those drinks with water or weak tea will help you lose weight fairly quickly even if you do not make any other alterations to your diet or your amount of activity.

It is also likely to damage your body if you embark on a strenuous exercise regime only relying on body fat to keep you going. Your body probably will not be able to deliver enough energy to fuel such a change, because your metabolism will be too low.

Someone going about it in this way, can become very weak and dizzy. It is not a good idea to run the risk of injury because you have not given your body all the energy it requires to complete the tasks you are requiring it to perform.

It is better to consult a doctor before you make any alterations to either your diet or your fitness routine. Confer with your doctor about your thoughts on fasting and fitness. They will be able to inform you whether they feel it is something you can try or whether it is just too risky.

Fasting is all right if you have do it for religious purposes, but do not attempt much physical exertion. Ask a Muslim how he or she feels during Ramadan! Fasting for long periods can lead to high blood pressure and even liver damage. So, be very wary before attempting to starve yourself fit, there are much better ways.

If you have converted your garage into a workshop or home office, you are sure to want heating in one form or another. This is because most garages are not built to the same standards of insulation as the main domestic building. However, that need not present a difficulty. You may even have the opposite problem during the summer, as garages often do not have windows, or at least large ones, either.

Exposure to air could be another matter that you will have to deal with, but we will come to that later. If you have a plentiful supply of dead wood, you could install a pot-bellied stove, but you will have to vent the flue outside. This is very easily done, since most garage walls are only one brick or block thick. However, if they do not burn correctly, there can be a smell, which you may find unpleasant.

Or you could use a paraffin/kerosene heater. They are cheap to buy and are readily portable. These heaters do not necessarily have to have a flue. They are easy to turn on as many of them employ an electric starter. Some also have a thermostat to regulate the temperature. They can be a hazard if there are children around as they can be tipped over. However, for most people, the glitch would be the smell given off.

You could use an electric hot air heater. They are quite cheap to buy, are easily portable and do not require a flue, but they can produce a very dry atmosphere and are costly to run.

One of the most common choices these days is a gas heater. There are many different types of gas heater, but most run on butane or propane. Most of the models are fairly inexpensive. The main benefit of a gas heater is that they give consistent heat, are fairly cheap to run and are portable. Or at least many of them are.

You could have one built in, but it is scarcely worth it, unless you are using gas that needs to be vented. Propane gas heaters also come with or without thermostatic controls. A propane heater could also double as a patio or deck heater on chilly evenings.

These gas heaters come in two forms: vented and unvented. The unvented models are the portable ones. They use the air from the room and the vented models have a flue that vents straight out of the garage. The slight disadvantage of the unvented model is that you have to keep the room airy at all times.

Therefore, if you choose a portable, unvented propane heater, you must leave a window partly open in order to allow the exchange of air and these heaters can be used as patio or deck heaters during the spring and autumn/fall. However, the vented gas heaters are fixed and have a flue attached, so they cannot be taken outside. Furthermore, if you decide on a vented model, you would be better off getting a professional in to install it for you by the book.

Owen Jones, the writer of this piece, writes on many subjects, but is currently involved with the propane outdoor heater. If you are interested in patio heaters too, please click through to Residential Patio Heaters.

Cobras

Author: Colin Jones

The spitting cobra is one of the most peculiar species of snake as it not only has a deadly bite but it also sprays venom into the eyes of prey and aggressors alike. Contact with the eyes can be very painful and even blinding, therefore, if you accidentally get cobra snake venom in your eyes, wash them out immediately so as to prevent permanent damage to the tissue.

The King Cobra, Ophiophagus hannah, also distinguishes itself in this large family of snakes (elapids) by the fact that it feeds almost entirely on other snakes with mice and small birds also falling prey to its venom.

The King Cobra is also unique because of its size – it can reach 5.85m (almost 20 feet) in length, which makes it the longest poisonous snake in the world. The latest discovery of a new species of cobra was made in 2003 when it was identified by London Zoo as part of an illegal shipment of exotic pets.

Going by DNA reports, this new species of snake is similar to the red spitting cobra but differs in genes. It apparently originates from an area between Sudan and Egypt and it has been named the ‘Nubian Spitting Cobra’.

Though highly dangerous when it senses a threat, a cobra will not attack if you leave it in peace, although the venomous spit can travel very accurately for two meters. If compared to the strike of a rattlesnake, the cobra is pretty slow in attack, and many bites prove blank, that is without envenomation.

A study conducted on Malaysian cobra snake victims indicates that only 55% of the wounds involved venom release and the same statistics indicate a mortality rate of 10% for people bitten, since the toxins injected into the blood of the prey devastate the nerves (neurotoxin) inducing respiratory failure half an hour after being bitten, giving you 30 minutes to seek an antidote.

The colouration is variable from light green-grey to black, while juveniles are yellow and black banded. This snake can find a habitat all over south-eastern Asia.

Keeping Your Dog Motivated

Author: Owen Jones

Keeping the attention of a dog during training is not always an easy task. Dogs can be very easily distracted, and it is important to not allow the dog training sessions to be sabotaged by boredom. Making dog training fun for the dog and the human alike is essential to creating a happy, well-adjusted and well-trained dog.

Providing random positive stimuli throughout the day is a great way to keep the interest of your dog. Doing things the dog enjoys, like walking in the park, riding in the car, and playing with other dogs, are good ways to keep the dog’s attention, but you must reward him for small successes.

For instance, to thank the dog for coming to you when you call him, tell the dog to come to you, without giving any clues about going for a walk, a car ride, or other treats.

After your dog has come to you and obediently sat down, attach the leash and begin the reward. This can be either the afore-mentioned walk in the park, ride in the car, or anything else the dog likes to do.

Giving some sort of reward, whether a treat, a special outing, or just a scratch behind the ears, every time the dog does something you want, is a great method to keep your dog motivated while you are dog training.

If your dog knows something good is going to occur every time he obeys your commands, he will be more motivated to do want you tell him every time.

Distraction training.

When training a dog, it is important to not let distractions spoil the training. The dog must be taught to ignore distractions, such as other people, other dogs, other animals and loud noises, and focus on what is being taught These kinds of distractions can even be used as rewards when training your dog to come when called.

For example, if your dog enjoys romping with other dogs, whether it be in the park or with the neighbour’s dogs, let him play with those other dogs. Then go into the park or yard and call your dog.

When he comes to you, give him lots of praise, treats and other rewards, then immediately allow the dog to return to playing with his pals. Do this a few times and praise the dog each time he comes to you.

The dog will quickly learn that coming to your call results in good things (treats and praise) and not bad ones (being removed from the park).

This so-called distraction training is one of the most difficult things for your dog to learn, because dogs are social animals by nature, and breaking away from the pack is one of the hardest things you can ask your dog to do. Most dogs will be understandably unwilling to leave their doggy companions, but it is vital to persist in dog training.

Training the dog to come to you may take some creativity on your part at first. For instance, waving a favourite toy, or a lure, is a good way to get your dog’s attention and put the focus back on you. If your dog has been clicker trained, a quick click can be a good motivator too when you are training your dog.

Once the dog starts to become used to coming when called, you can begin to reduce and then stop the visual cues and focus on making the dog respond to just your voice. It is vital that your dog obeys voice commands alone, as you will not always have a toy or lure to hand.
